Hour for hour Bar Method is the workout routine that brings me the greatest degree of strength, muscle tone, poise, grace and confidence… I found camaraderie with my fellow Bar Method devotees, I found inspiration from the strength and dedication of the people in each class who had the same commitment to work hard and shake their way through every set of thigh, I rediscovered my personal sense of motivation, and most of all, I got what I really wanted: to fit into all my old clothes!
Each Bar Method teacher has a way of making each class both a challenge to be conquered and a celebration of accomplishment. Every day that I go to class, I walk a little bit taller, with better posture, and more confidence knowing that I am doing my part to keep my body healthy, strong and toned.
MERYL | 58 CLASSES
After my first 6 months of taking on average of 4-5 classes a week, clothes that I hadn’t worn (ever) fit, and everything I had worn before, was hanging off me. I felt muscles in my legs, arms and abs that I never had felt before, even in my college years while training competitively.
I also felt ten years younger, and was so much more willing to take up old hobbies and sports I had previously given up because I didn’t feel strong/fast/young/toned enough. I even joined extra sports teams because I had so much more energy and felt that extra activities would add benefits to the exercise I did at the Bar Method. Words cannot even express the additional joy that the Bar Method has added to my life.

Signing up for the Bar Method Fall Fitness Challenge was by and far my best decision of 2012. These past four months have been amazing. I've been able to get off my depression medication because these classes lift my spirit and change my outlook on life. My knee and ankle that were hurting, no longer hurt. And I'm feeling stronger both physically and mentally.
…I'm eternally grateful for the Bar Method Portland and all of the instructors. It's been such a wonderful place for me to start my day and constantly be challenged both physically and mentally. I look forward to continuing the amazing journey with you all.

I was looking for a compelling exercise regime that I could embrace and thus would result in effective conditioning. I just couldn’t have anticipated the impact Bar Method would have on my life. Like many people I was hooked after my first hour; I loved every painful minute of the shaking, discovering muscles I hadn’t used in years. With the continued support and encouragement from the Bar staff and community I have become “that person”; able to sink a little deeper, take the more difficult option, and stand with more confidence.
The teachers are always kind, funny, motivating, and slightly evil, which is a great combination for a rewarding hour of class. When my friends and family ask me what my favorite thing about Bar is, I tell them I love that the better I get (strength-wise, form-wise, flexibility-wise) the harder Bar becomes and the harder I work.

Of course, you know what I'm talking about even though my friends had to asked several times before they understood.."So why are you going to Bar everyday again?" "I’m investing in my assets" I'd reply. Then look my naturally skinny-legged friend dead in the face and say "Seriously, my ass has never looked better".
Knowing that I can juggle my busy schedule and a healthy enriching hobby like Bar Method leads my mind in so many directions. The possibilities are endless and I feel more unstoppable than ever before.

The Bar Method is the only workout I've found that I absolutely love doing and look forward to each day. My arms are more defined, my thighs and waist are smaller, and the skinny jeans that I could only wear on good days before are now a little baggy! This is the most confident I've been about my body in years and I love how much stronger I am. Seeing the transformation in myself and in the others has truly been an inspiration.

It feels great having to shop for smaller sizes. I am also more aware of my posture outside of class. In addition to the physical changes I gained more confidence and feel mentally stronger and have a more positive outlook on life.

I also found inspiration in the instructors who had clearly mastered the technique, and were consistently cheerful and helpful. Each day, I took pleasure in knowing that the feeling of “I did it” reverberated throughout other aspects of my life. The class was an on-going reminder of my inner strength and resilience.

I was greeted by beautiful, warm and welcoming women. Everyone was so inspiring and extremely supportive. This made it so comfortable for me to start exercising again and to try something I knew nothing about.
KRISTEN — Took 34 classes and lost 4” during the 2010 Fitness Challenge
“I initially came to The Bar Method under the worst of circumstances: I had been side-lined by a running injury for 2 months and was losing muscle mass and my mind. My sports medicine physician and physical therapist had both suggested that I stop running so that my body could have adequate time to heal. Unfortunately, as the summer progressed, my healing did not and I was slowly stripped of essentially all cardiovascular activity due to immense pain.
My experience at The Bar Method has been nothing but incredible. I immediately felt like I was part of an intimate community and that the instructors truly cared about my development as a student. The instructors are so patient and kind, but still laugh with me while I try to get into the various positions!... I am constantly amazed at the care taken to make every student feel special, welcome, and cared for.
For whatever reason, The Bar Method is the only physical activity that I can perform that doesn’t bring me to tears. The Bar Method has rocked my world! I am so ecstatic that I have found something that doesn’t hurt AND increases my muscle mass and tone! I have been frequently complimented on my “lifted seat”, hamstrings, and arms. My hips have always been home to my chocolate intake, but I never really noticed it before since I was constantly running. Thankfully, since going to The Bar Method an average of 3 days a week I have already noticed a dramatic cinching of my waist (my boyfriend has noticed it too) and hips! I feel so much more confident and happy after including The Bar Method into my life.”

I’ve seen posture improve, clothing become looser, stamina increase and muscles tone, in myself and other Bar Method students. These positive changes keep me visiting the studio as often as possible.
I, like many, had specific goals for weight and clothing size. This challenge has changed those goal to ones focused on improvement and change. I push myself daily to reach for something more in the exercise itself. Each set has something I use to measure my progress…This focus and enjoyment of process allows me to repeatedly exceed my former best performance. I’m also able to remain positive when my body seems not to respond to my urging. I’m using this Bar Method practice throughout my day. Achievement follows not only in the studio, but in all parts of my life and work.
DEBRAH — Took 44 classes and lost 9 inches during the 2010 Fitness Challenge.
I can tell 3 months went by when I put on my jeans, workout pants and even tee shirts and they are all looser! As a 53 year old in the height of pre-menopause I can say for the last 3 months my body has been more consistent than it has in the last 3 years. I have always made exercise a priority. I’ve done all types of workouts too. Let me tell you -- in pre-menopause you can gain and lose 5 pounds overnight! It's PMS times1000!! But this workout really makes you forget you're there. I've done cross fit, hiking, running, yoga-- nothing compares!
I'm never bored and always happy to go to class…. The challenge wasn't a challenge because I love going. I love my small improvements. And I know I'll have more. What I love the most is consistently feeling good! And in this phase of life--that's not easy to do!! The challenge made me more determined and I like that! And I really love the studio. Its always clean (I'm the Clean Chic-- I notice!) great music, everyone is friendly and there is no attitude!!
DEE — Took 40 classes and lost 5.6 inches during the 2010 Fitness Challenge.
When I first walked into The Bar Method, 4 months after having my baby, I almost walked right out again. Group exercise classes have never been my thing and seeing all of those fit, healthy looking ladies made me want to cry!
This is hands-down the best possible exercise for anyone who is trying to recover from any major event (childbirth) or injury—hands-down! It’s like physical therapy with the added benefit of fitness. The precision of the movements and the constant guidance from the instructors achieves a muscular balance that I didn’t know was possible.
I had a very stressful and complicated pregnancy… I had managed to gain another 15lbs post pregnancy. I was totally depressed and frustrated… Now, 50lbs heavier, I could barely stand up from a chair without wincing from the pain in my lowerback/tailbone area and the miserable sciatica that this was causing. Most importantly, I could see that I was just not enjoying what should have been a really amazing time in my life with a lovely, cheerful baby and a supportive, loving husband. Something had to change or I knew I would regret it forever.
After the fitness challenge Dee reported many positive changes:
I can actually sit down and stand up like a thirty-something year old, and not like an 80 year old.
Vastly improved flexibility in my hips and back.
As a runner, I’d just come to assume that random tightness and aches were an unfortunate necessity… I can see how (Bar Method) will also help me continue to run: only even better-injury free!
Went down two pant sizes… I lost 15lbs, BUT I have to say, I can fit into clothes that I shouldn’t fit into unless I was about 10lbs lighter
I feel calmer, more in control of the craziness that is my life right now.
